Whenever a major incident takes place in the United States or other western countries, we often watch international channels CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera for the update. Once the event is over, the next time these channels are viewed is when the next big event happens. The situation is similar with regard to the Indian and Arab media.
Last year was the year of the US elections. These elections were also important to us as well. And the significance was in the sense that the Republican Party of the United States either ignored the martial law or openly supported it. Democrats have always opposed martial law.
It is a well-established US tradition that the opposition comes to power after the party’s two terms. That is why we always witnessed martial law when the president of the Democratic Party in the United States is about to complete his second term. And that’s why our martial law always lasts eight to ten years.
It’s no secret that the regime we have today in Pakistan is a ‘ten-year program’. And the plan was drawn up in light of Trump’s two terms in office. Last year’s US election was also very important to us in the sense that our own ten-year plan depended on its outcome. So, from October onwards, we started watching the American media daily.
Not only news but also talk shows were watched with complete focus. The idea was to continue the process until the election results came out. But the spectacle that began after the election forced us to observe American news channels in the post-election phase. Watching the American media for hours every day with complete restraint gave some interesting experiences about the American political system.
The first experience I have that our indigenous liberals have no idea about their political system. They only exaggerate. For example, our liberals have been telling us that the religion card and racial discrimination are only in Pakistan’s politics. However, the religion card is also present in the United States. For example, when US Supreme Court makes a bench for cases, it is seen how many liberal judges are named and how many are conservatives.
The American media makes it clear that their decisions are influenced by religion. One of the main objections of the liberal media regarding Donald Trump is that he had abolished the majority of liberal judges in the Supreme Court by appointing three Conservative judges during his presidency.
Similarly, Trump’s nationalism and white supremacist approach reflect racial discrimination. This is not a trivial prejudice, it poses such serious threats to democracy in the United States that even great thinkers like Noam Chomsky and Francis Fukuyama are disappointed.
The second experience was that the respect for institutions and the greatness of parliament are also not present there as well. Trump’s recent “peaceful political struggle” on Capitol Hill will be remembered for centuries. The doors and windows of the House were broken.
The third experience was that the practice of calling the truth the truth is not in their decisive position. They also have a “party policy”. Moreover, hypocrisy is rampant in their political system. Take, for example, senior Senator Lindsay Graham. When Donald Trump was making false claims regarding rigging in the election, he was his biggest supporter. But when the Capitol Hill incident happened, he parted ways with Trump. The next evening, when he arrived at the airport, and only four Trump supporters chanted “Shame”, he again joined Trump’s party.
The fourth experience was that the “supremacy of the constitution” in the United States is also a hoax. When a motion to impeach Trump for carrying out an armed attack on Parliament was filed in the US Senate, Republican senators took the position that the impeachment was unconstitutional.
When the impeachment began and House managers presented all sorts of evidence to prove that Donald Trump was responsible for the attack, 43 Republican senators backed Trump, saving him from being “disqualified” for the future.
In this way, the constitution there also has no value. Trump after attacking parliament has also saved himself from impeachment. So our politicians have been defamed for no reason. The behavior of these poor politicians is the same as that of American politicians.
