India’s Republic Day celebrations were overshadowed by thousands of farmers who burst through police barriers to protest against new farm laws right in the heart of the nation’s capital. This was perhaps the biggest challenge the Modi government has faced ever since it assumed power.
The farmers have been protesting for over two months and numerous rounds of talks have failed as the Modi government refused to repeal the agriculture laws. Agriculture still employs half of India’s workforce and is the bedrock of the economy but still the government wants to hand it over to large corporations. The farmers had enough and decided to march in the Indian capital.
Angry farmers frustrated with the policies of the Modi government unleashed unprecedented chaos as they took over the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, climbed its ramparts, and hoisted a flag on the mast outside. The Indian media was furious and went to extent of calling it a Pakistani flag until it was pointed out it was the Nishan Sahib revered by the Sikhs and commonly placed at gurdwaras.
The sensationalist Indian media then attempted to blame Khalistan separatists for hijacking the protest without realizing that the challenges India faces and the voices of dissents are gradually rising. The Indian farmers, the majority of whom are Sikhs, have hailed the moved as a symbolic victory over the fascist Modi government. The protester who hoisted the flag has been praised for his bravery by Sikhs who like other minorities are also seeking persecuted by the Hindutva state.
The Indian police had attempted to secure the area where Modi was giving a mundane speech but the farmers on tractors broke all barriers and came miles within the military parade. There were pitched battles and at least eighty people were injured. The Indian government made no attempts to give restraining orders to quell the protests or even mention the farmers. The Indian government is now in direct confrontation as it has deployed troops and many cities are placed under high alert.
Indian is facing several separatist movements stemming from denial of expression, gross violation of human rights, discrimination, and decades of persecution. It must realize the challenges that its discriminatory black laws are eroding democracy and secularism in the country and are also affecting its economy.
