No permission, no stopping

Riyatullah Farooqui by Riyatullah Farooqui

Today is December 13. The day when after kicking Aristotle’s grave in Multan, it was announced that we will not stop the Lahore rally but will not allow it.

If you think about it, this dual policy was already known but was put into practice for the first time. After coming to power, those who caused an exorbitant rise in prices of medicines may have known very well what they are doing is prohibited but no one will stop them.

Even the policemen who killed parents brazenly in front of innocent children in Sahiwal may have been well aware that fake police encounters are outlawed but they will not be held accountable.

The company responsible for BRT construction in Peshawar may have known that using substandard material was not allowed but would not be stopped. Even those pushing metro buses probably knew that buying faulty buses is not allowed but they will not be stopped either.

Those who looted billions of rupees by skyrocketing sugar prices knew that this daylight robbery was not allowed but they would not be stopped and this was repeated by those for wheat crises. Even those who delayed LNG tenders and bought expensive gas were well aware that the country is not only losing billions but also facing a gas crisis but no one will stop them.

How can the government which has not stopped the perpetrators of these crimes is trying to show gratitude by not allowing a democratic but saying we will not stop them?

It is ironic as worldwide looting is not allowed but is being prevented, while democratic activities are allowed and not stopped. While our government’s logic is that looting is being practiced but it does not take the trouble to stop them. On the other hand, legitimate democratic struggle it says, we will not stop but it is not allowed.

Who would have thought that in the name of change, we would have a bizarre policy by the government from day one for those breaking the law that looting is not allowed but will not be stopped? These looters then walk away freely after every incident, while those who upholding democracy will be grinding with NAB.

Then they have the audacity to tell us that democratic activities are not allowed but we will not stop them.  And n the next breath, they dare to threaten us and say that we will deal with you after the rally.

The question rises why NAB does not prosecute those involved in corruption under the guise of sugar, wheat, gas, BRT and drug prices. Why are the faces of these thieves and looters threatening democratic workers not been exposed? Had NAB pursued these looters instead of political activists and businessmen, the country would not have suffered the catastrophe that has resulted in the opposition being hailed as the saviour today.

Who can deny the fact that every opposition exerts pressure but only those succeed who have the support of the common man? People only join the opposition when they are disappointed by the government.

You should not be in the grand delusion that since you could not overthrow Nawaz Sharif’s government through sit-ins and rallies, it simply means that your government will not be overthrown.

You had neither moral legitimacy nor constitutional legitimacy. You were fighting for someone else, not for the people. The one whose finger you have been waiting for but could not dare to raise because you do not have the public power.

Those who are coming this time have already shown their thumbs down. They are not coming to lift anyone’s finger but to overthrow your throne.  How can a throne dangling at the fingertips compete with the people? How will those who could not stop the rally in Multan with all their might be able to save their throne?
