The opposition has nominated JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman as the head of the Pakistan Democratic Movement, a multi-party alliance that has been formed to oust Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government.
During a virtual meeting of the alliance, Nawaz Sharif recommended the JUI-F chief’s name which was unanimously approved by all parties. Given the recent provocative speeches, Nawaz is unlikely to return anytime soon to lead any agitation. Zardari has taken a backseat due to his health and has been indicted in three NAB references. Under such circumstances, Maulana Fazl has emerged as the most suitable opposition leader to take on the government.
The question remains whether Maulana Fazl has the capability to indulge in a direct confrontation with Imran Khan’s government. Any tussle will also place him at loggerheads with the state institutions and the situation could worsen. He appears undeterred and has even challenged the state to arrest him and has vowed to continue his campaign against the government.
The PDM is unlikely to achieve its ambition in toppling Imran’s government and hence, the blame would fall directly on the JUI-F chief. He has already hit a roadblock when their first rally in Quetta had to be postponed by a week which shows the PDM is unprepared for a large-scale movement. The PPP may be willing to tackle Imran’s government but will be extremely cautious from any confrontation with the establishment.
Last year, we witnessed how the Azadi March launched by Maulana Fazl ended in embarrassment with no significant gains. Will be PDM be a repeat of the Azadi March and have a similar unceremonious ending? It also needs to be seen if Maulana Fazl will this time around come with more vengeance and he takes on his greatest political adversary. It is certain that there were be chaos once again as protests pick pace despite the pandemic.
The opposition wants to bring down Imran Khan’s government before the next Senate election in March. The PTI is set to gain a majority in the Upper House and will then be easily able to pass legislation. There is no respite for the opposition’s legal and political woes but it should ensure there is no anarchy in the country.
