NEW YORK: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a strong ally of Pakistan, has brought up the Kashmir yet again at the United Nations General Assembly today (Tuesday).
“The Kashmir conflict which is also the key to the stability and peace of South Asia is still a burning issue,” he said while addressing the 75th session of UN General Assembly.
He further said, “We are in favour of solving this issue through dialogue within the framework of the United Nations resolutions, especially in line with the expectations of the people of Kashmir.”
The Turkish President strongly criticised the abolition of the special status of Kashmir last year saying that steps taken after it further complicated the problem.
Meanwhile, a prominent Kashmiri leader has welcomed the Turkish President’s strong support to the Kashmir cause, saying his speech was a true reflection of the aspirations of Kashmiri people.
“Erdogan’s words today have become a source of inspiration and given hope to millions of hopeless people of the region,” Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, secretary-general of the Washington-based World Kashmir Awareness Forum said.
He also noted that President Erdogan’s call for a multilateral dialogue was consistent with the statement made the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Ambassador Volkan Bozkir, a veteran Turkish diplomat, who said that “Multilateralism is not an option, but a necessity.”
