The Sindh government, in consultation with the National Command and Operations Center, has decided to ban sacrifices on roads and streets to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. The provincial government has also released the union council-wise list of pre-designated places in all districts for slaughtering sacrificial animals as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) against COVID-19 during the Eid-ul-Adha.
The Sindh government has allotted 120 places in the western district, 119 in the central district, 60 in the eastern district, 30 in Malir district, and 120 in the southern district where citizens can offer slaughtering.
Eid-ul-Adha is considered to be the biggest festival of Muslims. Many businesses across the city thrive on this occasion. However, those who do not have access to good food throughout the year are also provided meat by philanthropists on this occasion.
Following the Sunnat-e-Abraham, every Pakistani wants to fulfill the Sunnah and in this regard, many of the citizens perform the sacrifices individually and some people sacrifice collectively. While there were no restrictions by the government, people used to offer sacrifices in front of their homes. This year, however, the Sindh government has voluntarily banned sacrifices on the streets in Karachi.
The steps taken by the government in the public interest are often criticized. Meanwhile, citizens are also angry over the Sindh government’s move regarding sacrifice. However, there is nothing wrong with sacrificing at government-designated places. In other countries of the world, the government always designated places for slaughtering the sacrificial animals.
Sanitation is a major issue in Karachi, while the situation in the city had worsened during the torrential rains. In the last few days, due to torrential rains, these pools of stagnant rainwater are serving as breeding places for mosquitoes which may cause viral diseases.
After slaughtering outside the house and on the streets, it is often observed that due to lack of cleanliness, blood accumulates in some places. The people should establish positive traditions by implementing the steps taken by the government and the government should also make the steps taken in the public interest permanently.
