Strikes of Media

Areeba Siddiqui by Areeba Siddiqui

The media often strikes us all. Strikes here doesn’t mean attacking with knives or guns but the media strikes us with its words because for it claims that it is free so, it can speak whatever it wants. Our media is now as free as the media in the West.
Whenever the word freedom comes the example of West is given because they have taught us the meaning of freedom. Otherwise, we haven’t any acquaintance regarding freedom? Our media has worked hard to liberate itself.
A few months back, a well-known drama-writer of our country, exercising his right to freedom (in the same way as the media exercises its), spoke against a woman who was promoting feminism in Pakistan on a media channel, and a quarrel emerged between both of them.
The second incident took place recently when an Islamic scholar of our country while praying during a program on national television, explained the meaning of a hadith in which he said that media tells lie and obscenities have been promoted through media. And a storm of insults broke out between both personalities.
The two were insulted and even forced to apologize. Our renowned Islamic scholar apologized to some journalists on the next day of the incident, which is not only embarrassing but unacceptable for our community.
The first thing to understand is: what is freedom? What we think regarding freedom or what our media calls freedom is Western ideology imposed upon us. According to the Western ideology of freedom, a person is completely free to live his life as he pleases.
The meaning of freedom will further be clear from the words of former US President Barack Obama who said in a speech, “If someone says something to our holy book, we would not react because he has the freedom of speech.”
The media is constantly presenting an understanding of freedom taken from the West. Yet, the same media lashed out when someone spoke against them. We can criticize someone’s words, but if we are talking about freedom, then according to Western ideology, we cannot force someone to apologize.
If our media understands what freedom is, then why do these incidents happen. The fight here was neither between a drama-writer and a woman, nor between a cleric or some anchors. There was a contradiction between the two ideologies. There is a battle between the western and the eastern society, which proves who is running our media.
How can the Western agenda, which has brought the media to this point, tolerate anyone speaking out against them? Now we must understand that neither the media nor we are free. The media is bound by the Western ideology of freedom and our minds are controlled by the media. That is why the media and we are unable to say anything on our own.
The Western ideology of freedom is being conveyed to us through our media. We are being exposed only to obscenity. In the name of freedom, women are being forced to leave their homes and being provoked. Now, if anyone dares to speak out against all these things, he is treated in the same way as these two personalities.
The media has snatched our right to speak in the name of freedom, leaving us completely helpless. The only ideology adopted in the media is that if a person speaks against their purpose, his voice should be silenced. In the name of this freedom, the strikes of the media are intensifying on us and we are responsible for it, because we do not dare to speak against them and their fake news.
Now we have to decide for ourselves whether we have to bear the brunt of the media in the name of freedom to disrespect the religious scholars in front of us or shatter the ideology of silence and raise our voices against an ideology being imposed upon us.
