BEIJING: A Chinese local court has awarded death sentence to a man for seriously stabbing two officials at a checkpoint establish to control the spread of the new coronavirus epidemic.
The court awarded verdict to a 23-year-old man, Ma Jianguo after he stabbed two officials at one local village checkpoint.
The incident took place on 6 February when Jianguo was driving a vehicle through a checkpoint at Luo Meng village in southwestern Yunnan province, where Jianguo was stopped.
After the man rebuffed to cooperate with officials during the checking of coronavirus, his passenger began trying to remove the roadblock. Meanwhile, the enraged Jianguo stabbed the official in the chest and abdomen with a knife and then attacked another officer who came to the victim’s aid.
The global death toll from the novel coronavirus outbreak jumped 3,000 on Monday after China reported 42 more deaths and the number of cases augmented across the globe.
According to the Chinese National Health Commission, China reported 42 more deaths on Monday, most in Wuhan central Hubei province.
The death toll in China alone jumped to 2,912 however, it is also rising abroad, with the second-highest tally in Iran with 54, while the United States and Australia had their first deaths from the coronavirus disease during the weekend.
Coronavirus outbreak has now infected over 88,000 people and spread to more than 60 countries around the world after first emerging in China in 2019.
