CHARSADDA: Prominent religious scholar Sheikh Muhammad Idris Tarangzai was killed Monday in a targeted firing attack in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda district, officials confirmed. Two on-duty police constables were critically injured in the incident.
According to reports gathered by MM News from local and other sources, the attack occurred in broad daylight when unidentified assailants opened fire on the vehicle carrying Sheikh Idris. A hospital in Charsadda later confirmed his death, referring to him as “martyred”.
Video footage from the scene shows a white Honda hatchback with a severely shattered rear windshield and extensive bullet damage. The caption accompanying the footage identifies it as the car Sheikh Muhammad Idris Tarangzai was traveling in when the attack took place.
His killing came just days after he publically praised Field Marshal Asim Munir and his efforts to bring about peace in the Middle East.

Large crowds gathered near the site following the shooting, with bystanders and police personnel documenting the aftermath.
The incident took place on a busy street near the “Muslim Model School,” where residents lined the road as security forces secured the area.
The two injured constables, who were on duty at the time, were rushed to a nearby medical facility and remain in critical condition. Their identities have not yet been released by authorities.
Security Context
The assassination comes amid a surge of violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Official data indicates the province recorded 3,811 of 5,397 terrorist-related incidents nationwide last year, making it the region hardest hit by militancy. In recent days, multiple attacks have been reported in Bajaur, Bannu, Mardan, and South Waziristan, including quadcopter strikes and ambushes on security personnel.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for Monday’s attack. Police have launched an investigation and increased security across Charsadda district.
Sheikh Muhammad Idris Tarangzai was a well-known religious figure in the region. News of his death prompted an outpouring of condolences across local social media.
