Rajab Butt under fire as viral vlog sparks privacy outcry

KARACHI: Controversial social media personality Rajab Butt has found himself at the center of a fresh wave of public indignation following the release of a vlog clip that critics have characterized as a blatant violation of privacy and digital ethics.

The footage, which has since gone viral across X (formerly Twitter) and other social media platforms, features the YouTuber filming a meal in a public dining area while a family seated directly behind him appears visibly distressed.

Family vloggers and TikTok clout chasers in Pakistan have zero shame left zero. They’ll shove a camera in anyone’s face, anywhere, without caring about people’s privacy.

The controversy centers on a specific segment of the video where a woman in the background is seen attempting to shield her face and turning away from the camera in a clear display of discomfort. Despite the woman’s apparent unease, the filming continued without adjustment, a move that social media users have slammed as “intrusive” and “predatory.”

It is important to mention here that the latest outcry comes at a particularly turbulent time for the content creator, who is already embroiled in multiple legal battles.

Just last week, an Additional District and Sessions Court in Karachi cancelled his interim pre-arrest bail in a case involving the alleged insult of religious symbols, citing his repeated failure to appear for hearings. Simultaneously, he faces separate proceedings in Lahore concerning the promotion of illegal gambling applications and a high-profile indictment scheduled for late April regarding more serious criminal allegations.

This latest incident has reignited a broader national debate regarding the “vlogging culture” in Pakistan, where the quest for digital engagement often overrides the fundamental right to privacy.

Legal experts and digital rights activists have pointed toward the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), specifically sections related to the privacy of individuals and the dignity of women, as potential grounds for regulatory intervention.

Public and Political Backlash

On social media, the reaction has been overwhelmingly critical. Thousands of users have tagged law enforcement agencies and high-ranking government officials, including Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, calling for a crackdown on “clout-chasers” who treat public spaces as private studios. Critics argue that such behavior not only violates Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees the inviolability of dignity and privacy, but also sets a damaging precedent for the country’s youth.

While a small minority of defenders suggested that incidental background appearances are a byproduct of public life, the prevailing sentiment remains one of exhaustion. Observers note that the public’s patience with intrusive “family vlogging” is wearing thin, especially when it involves the non-consensual filming of women in conservative social settings.

As the backlash intensifies, there are growing calls for restaurants and public establishments to implement stricter policies regarding professional filming on their premises to protect the anonymity and comfort of their patrons.

For Rajab Butt, whose career has been punctuated by frequent court appearances and public altercations, this latest episode adds a significant layer of social pressure to an already precarious legal standing.
