Nanbais (tandoor owner) across parts of Punjab are selling 100-gram roti (flatbread) at Rs20, disregarding the government’s officially fixed rate of Rs14.
The government had set the price of a 100-gram roti at Rs14 in a bid to provide relief to the public, but nanbais said the rate is no longer viable amid surging inflation.
“Even selling roti at Rs 15 is no longer sustainable,” several tandoor owners said, citing a sharp increase in expenses.
They said the gas price had doubled from around Rs250 per kilogram to Rs500, along with higher labour costs and overall inflation.
Consumers, meanwhile, said the price hike is adding to their daily burden. “Gas supply at home is unreliable, so we are forced to buy roti from outside,” one resident said.
Others noted that even securing two meals a day has become increasingly difficult for low-income households.
