Punjab’s daily education surprises leave teachers, students reeling

Reading Time: 2 mins read

LAHORE: In a span of just three days, Punjab’s education authorities have issued three contradictory directives on school schedules, leaving parents, teachers, and students bewildered and angry over what many are calling a “classic case of policy whiplash.”

On March 30 (Monday), Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that all schools, colleges, and universities would reopen on April 1 with a full five-day physical schedule. He categorically rejected hybrid or online systems, insisting there would be no reduced days. Major media outlets too reported this as the government’s final position.

But by April 1 (Wednesday), the Punjab School Education Department abruptly issued a notification shifting to a four-day school week, declaring Fridays closed for physical classes. Revised timings were also circulated, again widely reported.

Then, on April 2 (Thursday morning), yet another directive emerged: schools, colleges, and universities would now be allowed to hold online classes on Fridays. Friday was no longer a full holiday, but an optional virtual day.

Schools, Colleges & Universities Are allowed to Take online Classes on Fridays. Your Patience & Support is Appreciated 🙏🇵🇰

That means in just 72 hours, the government’s stance has swung from:
– Five full physical days →
– Four days, Friday closed →
– Friday online allowed

The rapid reversals have sparked outrage. Replies under the minister’s latest tweet describe the situation as a “joke,” with many questioning his competence and pointing to the disruption caused to children’s studies and parents’ fuel budgets. Several commenters also highlighted weak cellular signals in rural and suburban Punjab, making online classes impractical.

Educationists argue the decisions appear reactive and half-baked, rolled out without a clear plan. “This is not an overreaction,” one parent wrote. “The announcements really have changed morning-to-evening-to-next-morning. It’s inconsistent governance, plain and simple — and our kids are paying the price.”

The confusion underscores a deeper problem: indecisive policy-making at a time when stability is most needed. For families across Punjab, the uncertainty has already translated into lost study time, wasted resources, and mounting frustration.
