As soon as the initial spell of rain hit the city, several areas across the metropolis reported power outages. While some residents attributed the outages to a “precautionary” measure by K-Electric to minimise the risk of electrocution during wet conditions, others criticised the utility, questioning its infrastructure and ability to ensure uninterrupted power supply despite modern-day requirements.
The rainfall is linked to changing weather patterns influenced by a westerly system and cold winds affecting the region, which can trigger intermittent showers and thunderstorms in Karachi during this time of year.
Weather advisories cited by MM News report indicate that the current spell may persist with occasional rain and gusty winds sweeping the city, causing a noticeable drop in temperature.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures, including avoiding unnecessary travel, particularly during heavy showers, and staying clear of electric poles and waterlogged areas.
Past incidents show that strong winds and rain in Karachi can disrupt traffic, uproot trees and pose safety risks.
Commuters were advised to exercise caution on roads, while residents were encouraged to secure loose objects and ensure proper drainage around their homes to prevent urban flooding.
It may be added here that the Pakistan Meteorological Department has indicated that similar weather conditions may continue intermittently, with varying intensity across different parts of the city.
