US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he is considering a limited military strike on Iran as part of efforts to pressure Tehran into reaching a nuclear agreement.
“I guess I can say I am considering that,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked whether he was weighing a limited strike to push Iran toward a deal. He did not provide further details and declined to answer additional shouted questions during the event.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that the US president was evaluating options for a targeted military action against Iran.
According to the report, potential strikes could focus on Iranian military or government sites.
The newspaper said the objective of such a limited strike would be to compel Iran to accept a nuclear agreement. It added that if Tehran refused to comply, the action could escalate into a broader conflict.
Trump has previously said that he prefers diplomacy in dealing with Iran but has warned that military force remains an option if necessary.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Gaza Board of Peace a day earlier, he cautioned that Iran would face “very serious consequences” if it failed to reach an agreement.
