Punjab’s high-flying controversy: Official airline or VIP comfort?

The Punjab government’s acquisition of a Gulfstream G500 business jet has ignited a firestorm of controversy across Pakistan, with critics questioning whether the Rs 10 to 11 billion purchase is a genuine step toward building a provincial airline or simply a luxury perk for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The aircraft, a 2019-model GVII-G500 currently registered in the United States as N144S, is a 16-seat VIP jet estimated to have cost between $38 and $42 million. It has not yet been locally registered in Pakistan, a detail that has only added fuel to the growing public debate.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has been the loudest defender of the purchase, insisting it forms the foundation of “Air Punjab,” the province’s first-ever airline.

According to the government, the maiden flight is targeted for April 2026, with plans to eventually build a fleet of seven aircraft through a combination of purchases and leases.

Senior management positions, including CEO, COO, and CFO, have already been advertised, suggesting the project is at least administratively underway.

However, the opposition and public remain deeply skeptical. Former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has argued that splurging billions on a luxury jet while ordinary Pakistanis struggle with rising fuel costs and economic hardship reflects a staggering disconnect between the government and the people it serves.

The criticism has been sharpened by an uncomfortable comparison making rounds on social media: PIA, the national carrier, was recently valued for privatization at roughly the same amount the Punjab government spent on this single aircraft.

Personal use allegations have proven equally damaging. Opponents have dismissed “Air Punjab” as little more than a convenient cover story, arguing the jet will effectively serve as a private aircraft for the Chief Minister.

These suspicions have been difficult to shake, particularly after reports emerged that the government has already sought a supplementary grant of PKR 86 crore simply to cover the jet’s maintenance and operational costs, before a single commercial flight has taken place.

Whether Air Punjab eventually takes off as a functioning airline or quietly fades into the long list of ambitious provincial projects that never materialized, the purchase has already cost the government something money cannot easily buy back, public trust.
