Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that he considers legislation setting 18 years as the minimum age to be un-Islamic, adding that he will violate the law and arrange marriages of youths under 18.
Addressing a joint session of parliament, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq that he felt the speaker was under pressure.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman reiterated that he viewed the legislation regarding the age of 18 as un-Islamic, adding that it would have been better had the matter been referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology.
He said he would violate the law and arrange marriages of those under 18, formally recording his strong protest in the House. “We will not allow such laws to be implemented in this country,” he said.
He added that he opposed the mindset behind the legislation and termed such “stopgap politics” inappropriate.
Commenting on the Gaza peace board, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that if changes were made to the points of the peace board, then why did they attend it in the first place. He said US president Donald Trump was strengthening Israel’s aggressive power and issuing threats to Hamas, adding that the US had devastated Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.
He further said that after attacking Iran, Israel would stand at the Taftan border, recalling that Israel’s first president had said that their foundation was based on eliminating a nascent Islamic state, adding that intentions were clear.
Criticizing participation in such forums, he said they were attending platforms that began with threats. He questioned why Pakistan’s passport barred travel to Israel, saying Pakistan wanted peace but peace had principles.
