In a significant move to uphold traditional social structures, the Punjab government has announced the expansion of its landmark housing project, “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar,” to now include joint families.
This update aims to provide financial relief to large families living together, allowing them to expand their existing residences through interest-free, easy-installment loans.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif termed the initiative a “golden gift” for the province, noting that it balances modern housing needs with the centuries-old cultural value of family cohesion.

Under the “Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar” branch, landless residents will receive both plots and interest-free construction loans.
By offering interest-free loans with manageable installments, the program aims to help families enlarge their existing homes, preserving the cultural tradition of shared living while easing financial pressure.
The scheme now includes specialized provisions for joint families to expand their residences.
The government aims to complete 160,000 homes by June 2026.
The initial phase involves balloting 1,534 plots across cities like Jhelum, Kasur, Faisalabad, and Lodhran.
The initiative has seen massive public engagement and high financial reliability.
Notably, the government is developing a new policy to protect families in the event of a primary applicant’s death, ensuring they do not lose their homes or financial support during a crisis.
