Two corneal transplants were successfully carried out at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in Karachi following a posthumous organ donation.
According to an SIUT spokesperson, 17-year-old Sher Ali donated his eye corneas after his death. Sher Ali was brought to SIUT after suffering a rupture of a brain artery.
With the consent of his family, his corneas were donated on January 7 and transplanted into two patients aged 45 and 21, restoring their eyesight.
The spokesperson said Professor Adeeb Rizvi paid tribute to Sher Ali’s family, praising their humanitarian gesture. Professor Rizvi stated that thinking for others represents the highest level of humanity and urged people to become part of the organ donation movement.
The spokesperson further shared that Sher Ali had a long-standing connection with SIUT. At the age of eight, his mother had donated a kidney to him.
The transplanted kidney functioned well for ten years, after which Sher Ali developed kidney complications again and was on dialysis. It was also revealed that Sher Ali’s father had previously donated a kidney to his nephew.
SIUT officials described the family’s continued commitment to organ donation as an inspiring example of selflessness and compassion.
