Australian Test cricketer Usman Khawaja has announced his retirement from international cricket. He will retire after playing the Pink Test of the Ashes series in Sydney.
Usman Khawaja, who began his first-class cricket career at the Sydney Cricket Ground, will retire after playing his 88th Test match.
The 39-year-old Khawaja made his debut in 2011 and scored more than 6,000 runs during his 15-year Test career.
According to Cricket Australia, Usman Khawaja has also built a legacy off the field through the Usman Khawaja Foundation. He is Australia’s first Pakistan-born and first Muslim Test cricketer.
In 2023, Usman was named ICC Test Cricketer of the Year and Shane Warne Test Cricketer of the Year. He was also part of the Australian team that won the ICC World Test Championship in 2023.
Usman Khawaja said that the most prominent feeling for him is contentment. He considers himself fortunate to have played so many matches for Australia and hopes he has inspired people.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said that Usman Khawaja made a significant contribution to Australian cricket through his exceptional performances. He added that Khawaja has established a strong impact through the Usman Khawaja Foundation and described him as one of Australia’s most stylish and outstanding batters.
Todd Greenberg further said that on behalf of Cricket Australia, he thanked Usman Khawaja and congratulated him on his achievements.
It is worth noting that Usman Khawaja has played 87 Tests, 40 One-Day Internationals, and 9 T20 Internationals. The final Test of the Ashes series will begin on January 4 at the SCG.
