Begum Khaleda Zia, the first female prime minister of Bangladesh and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has passed away at the age of 80.
In response to the news, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed profound sorrow, describing her as a “committed and sincere friend” of Pakistan.
In an official statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Bangladesh.
“Begum Khaleda Zia was a resolute friend of Pakistan. The government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with Bangladesh during this hour of grief,” the prime minister stated.
He further noted that his thoughts and prayers are with the late leader’s family and the Bangladeshi nation, emphasizing that her contributions to the relationship between the two countries would be long remembered.
He concluded his message by praying for the departed soul’s eternal peace.

Khaleda Zia made history as the first woman to hold the office of Prime Minister in Bangladesh, serving multiple terms (1991–1996 and 2001–2006).
She took over the leadership of the BNP following the assassination of her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, and remained a central figure in the country’s democratic journey for decades.
Her tenure is often remembered for significant reforms in the education sector, particularly for making primary education free and compulsory.
