All government efforts to curb sugar prices appear to have failed, as the commodity’s price surged by up to Rs10 per kilogram in just one week.
The highest retail price of sugar in the country has now reached Rs210 per kg.
According to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Peshawar, governed under the PTI-led administration, recorded the highest sugar prices across Pakistan.
The PBS report stated that within a week, the price of sugar in Peshawar rose by Rs10 per kg, forcing consumers to buy sugar at Rs210 per kg, the most expensive rate in the country.
The report further noted that the average national price of sugar increased by Rs3.77 per kg over the week. In Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Bannu, the maximum retail price reached Rs200 per kg, while in Karachi, sugar was being sold at Rs195 per kg.
