Contrary to some reports, neither Ajay Devgn nor Suniel Shetty was the first choice for the lead role (Malik, a character based on Dawood Ibrahim) in Ram Gopal Varma’s 2002 film Company; the role was initially offered to Shah Rukh Khan.
Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has revealed in interviews that he narrated the script to Shah Rukh Khan, who showed interest in the project. However, after a meeting, Varma decided against casting him.

RGV explained that he felt Shah Rukh Khan’s natural persona and acting style, which he described as “very energetic; he’s like a live wire,” would clash with the character’s required demeanor.
The character of Malik was meant to be subtle, calm, laid-back, and cold-minded, which Varma felt was a better fit for Ajay Devgn’s natural body language.
RGV stated that to make SRK act “still” would be an “injustice to both him and the film.”
He made the decision immediately after his meeting with Khan and called Ajay Devgn that same day to finalize the casting.
Notably, Ajay Devgn’s performance as the intense and composed don went on to become one of his most acclaimed roles.
