The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has issued notices to unregistered cemeteries, indicating possible action against them.
Acting on the directives of the Mayor of Karachi, KMC has decided to re-register all cemeteries under its jurisdiction. Notices have been served to cemeteries operating without official registration.
KMC’s Director of Cemeteries, Iqbal Parvez, said that legal action will be taken if those responsible for the unregistered cemeteries fail to respond to the notices.
He added that there are currently 38 registered cemeteries under KMC, while over 200 cemeteries in the city are unregistered.
Iqbal Parvez also mentioned that operations will be launched this month against cemeteries under the influence of land grabbers. Moreover, action is being taken against individuals charging excessive fees for burials, contrary to official KMC rates.
The notices warn that if no response is received, unregistered cemeteries will be brought under KMC’s control.
Earlier, the official rate for a grave within KMC-administered cemeteries is set at Rs14,300.
The mayor also issued a warning to gravediggers and caretakers charging unauthorised fees, calling for strict action against violators.
In January, the KMC began displaying banners at registered cemeteries to show the fixed burial rate of Rs14,300, following directives by Mayor Murtaza.
