In a shocking incident, a 71-year-old lawyer allegedly hurled a shoe at Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, better known as B. R. Gavai during a court proceeding, but was stopped by the security personnel.
The attacker was immediately taken into custody by security personnel.
The incident occurred just as Chief Justice Gavai began hearing the day’s first case. The man suddenly began shouting slogans and then hurled a shoe at the Chief Justice.
Justice Gavai responded with notable composure, saying, “Such attacks will not affect me.” He then proceeded with the court proceedings as usual.
Sources revealed that the detained individual possessed a Supreme Court proximity card, typically issued to lawyers or their assistants. However, the man’s motives remain unclear, and an investigation is underway.
Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday said the attack on Chief Justice of India BR Gavai was not just an attack on him but on the Constitution.
“No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself. It is an assault not just on him but on our Constitution as well,” she said in a statement.
The incident comes at a time when Chief Justice Gavai has been facing intense criticism on social media over a recent remark.
Last week, while dismissing a petition related to the reconstruction of a 7-foot-tall statue of Hindu deity Vishnu—which was missing its head and located in Khajuraho—Justice Gavai reportedly said: “Go and ask the deity to solve the issue himself.”
