Microphone cut-offs at UNGA raise eyebrows amid Palestine debate: Is it just technical glitch?

A series of microphone malfunctions at the United Nations disrupted speeches by several world leaders  including the presidents of Türkiye and Indonesia, and the prime minister of Canada, during a highly sensitive debate on the Gaza genocide and the recognition of Palestinian statehood.

According to a report by Turkish news outlet TRT World, several microphone disruptions occurred during sensitive discussions on the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the issue of Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)—prompting concern and speculation.

One such incident occurred while Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was speaking about deploying a peacekeeping force to Gaza. His microphone was suddenly cut off, leaving the interpreter struggling to continue the translation. Although the audio resumed a few seconds later, the disruption occurred at a critical moment in his address.

A few hours earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also experienced a similar technical glitch.

As Erdoğan was condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide and calling for the immediate recognition of a Palestinian state, the interpreter’s voice was heard saying:

“The President’s voice is not coming through; his mic is off.”

Although the issue was resolved quickly, it caused confusion in the hall during an already tense moment.

The most dramatic moment came on September 22, when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney officially announced Canada’s recognition of the State of Palestine. His declaration was met with applause from the delegates, but just moments later, his microphone was abruptly cut off.

Despite the room erupting in applause, the sudden audio cut-off raised questions among observers about the timing of the disruption.

Later, the UN technical staff said that the issue was due to equipment faults in the General Assembly hall, which had hosted dozens of high-level speeches that week. Officials emphasized that there was no indication of deliberate interference.

Still, the technical glitches came at a time when Gaza and Palestine were dominating the global agenda.

With each passing day, more countries, including France, Belgium, Malta, Luxembourg, and Canada, are moving to officially recognize Palestine as a state.

Meanwhile, leaders from Turkey, Indonesia, and other nations have called for immediate international action to halt the genocide in Gaza, ensure humanitarian access, and — if necessary — deploy peacekeeping forces.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned that Israel’s actions amount to genocide, while Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia is ready to send troops for a UN peace mission, should there be consensus.

Despite the microphone disruptions, the messages were delivered loud and clear.

Following Mark Carney’s speech, one delegate remarked:

“Even if the microphone didn’t cooperate, the message of recognizing Palestine as a state was heard loud and clear by everyone.”
