In Karachi, after rainfall, Thado Dam filled and flooding occurred in Lath Nadi, after which Malir and Lyari rivers swelled, and water entered the surrounding settlements, as reported by national media on Wednesday.
According to details, after Thado Dam filled, the water coming from the spillway further increased the level and flow of the river, after which the floodwater of Thado Dam entered the residential areas of Scheme 33, and M-9 near Jamali Bridge also got filled with floodwater.
The Sindh government decided to break the middle wall of M-9 to give passage to the water, according to the spokesperson of the Chief Minister of Sindh.
At Jam Goth Malir, Shahrah Bhutto was washed away in the flood, and the water cut through Shahrah Bhutto built in the middle of Malir river and flowed to the other side.
Flooding also occurred in Lyari river, and in FB Area, Shafiq Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal UC 1, Goharabad, Hasan Naumani Colony Sohrab Goth, and near Lyari Bakra Peeri, river water entered the houses, and citizens were trapped in their homes as several feet of water accumulated.In Machar Colony, Nashar Basti, and Isa Nagri, water of Lyari river also entered the houses.
Rescue operations are ongoing in flood-affected areas. According to the spokesperson of Rescue 1122, from Lasi Para 15 children, one elderly citizen, and 4 women were rescued, while from Nashar Basti 8 people and from Shehbaz Goth 12 people including 9 children were shifted to safe locations.
Pakistan Army and Rescue 1122 conducted a rescue operation near Saadi Town and safely moved 10 people to a safe place.
On the other hand, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Sindh, Saleem Baloch, has stated that the water coming onto M-9 is not from Thado Dam but from Lath Nadi.
He said that flood streams are coming into Karachi’s rivers from Kirthar Range, and after all dams in Sindh have filled, water is going from Malir river into the sea. Residential areas are safe; the problem is where encroachments have been built in the rivers.
