A shooting at a bus stop on the outskirts of East Jerusalem killed at least five Israelis and injured seven others on Monday, Israeli media reported.
Emergency responders, including Magen David Adom, identified the victims as one 50-year-old man and three in their early 30s.
The badly injured individuals were taken to local hospitals, while a few more got treatment on the scene.
Israeli police announced that the attackers were “neutralized” at the scene. Haritz newspaper wrote two suspected attackers were shot and killed by a security officer who happened to be on the scene.
Early estimates indicate that both attackers were West Bank residents who opened fire on the bus and bus stop.
In the wake of the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the scene and convened an emergency meeting with security officials.
While no organization has formally taken responsibility, Hamas termed the attack a “natural reaction” to Israeli behavior, and Islamic Jihad called it a response to what it referred to as the “crimes of the Zionist state.
