Netflix’s Rivers of Fate, a gripping four-episode Brazilian crime-thriller that plunges deep into the world of sex trafficking, vengeance, and survival in the unforgiving waters of the Atlantic Amazon. Originally titled Pssica, the miniseries reunites much of the creative team behind the groundbreaking film City of God.
Created by Stephanie Degreas, Fernando Garrido, and Bráulio Mantovani, and directed by Quico Meirelles and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Fernando Meirelles, the series delivers the same raw intensity that made City of God a global sensation. While filmed in Portuguese, Netflix provides English subtitles, ensuring accessibility to international audiences.
The story interweaves the lives of three central characters: Janalice (Domithila Cattete), a young woman abducted by human traffickers; Preá (Lucas Galvino), the reluctant leader of a ruthless river gang known as the “water rats”; and Mariangel (Marleyda Soto), a grieving mother consumed by vengeance after losing her family. Their paths cross in a chilling narrative shaped by crime, superstition, and a curse believed to haunt those who travel the Amazon’s rivers.
Producer Andrea Barata Ribeiro describes the adaptation as more than entertainment, noting, “I came across the book a few years ago and realized that reading it made me aware of some pressing issues and a reality that needs to be discussed. I’m really happy that we’re now launching this miniseries so that more people can hear these stories.”
