The much-awaited tram service in Lahore is set to start in February 2026, the Punjab government announced on Monday.
According to Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, the tram test run has been successfully completed, and the service will operate from Thokar to Harbanspura starting February 2026.
Bilal Akbar said that the tram will have a seating capacity of 270 passengers, with the project costing 3 million dollars. He added that officers from Punjab NESPAK and PMA visited China in connection with the project.
The provincial minister further said that metro train services have also been approved for Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro is expected to serve 300,000 passengers daily, while the Gujranwala metro will cater to 140,000 passengers daily.
He noted that the Faisalabad metro project has been allocated a budget of 110 million dollars, while the Gujranwala metro project will cost 50 million dollars.
Bilal Akbar added that rising environmental pollution from motorcycles and cars in Lahore has become a concern, and the tram and metro projects aim to help reduce pollution levels.
