Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has made a surprising statement about her onetime presidential rival, Donald Trump, suggesting that she would nominate him for a Nobel Prize if he manages to end the Russia-Ukraine war on specific terms.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Clinton said she would put Trump’s name forward for the prestigious award if he secures peace while ensuring that Ukraine does not lose any of its territory to Russia.
“This would mean that President Vladimir Putin would gradually withdraw from the occupied Ukrainian regions. If that happens, it would be a historic step for global peace,” Clinton wrote.
Clinton, the wife of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, made the remarks in the context of Russia’s ongoing control over nearly 18 percent of Ukraine’s territory, which Moscow claims as its own.
Her comments came shortly after Trump suggested that some “territorial or geographical adjustments” might be possible in resolving the conflict, though he provided no details.
Clinton also noted that Trump sees himself as deserving of the Nobel Prize because of his role in easing tensions in conflicts such as India-Pakistan, Armenia-Azerbaijan, Thailand-Cambodia, and for facilitating peace agreements in the Middle East.
Several lawmakers and governments around the world have already floated Trump’s name for a Nobel Prize nomination.
