Tensions flared at Islamabad’s Madni Mosque on Friday as protesters clashed with police following the afternoon prayers.
Demonstrators hurled stones at security personnel and blocked the main road near Rawal Dam Chowk, disrupting traffic and escalating the stand-off.
The unrest comes amid a heated dispute over the demolition of the Madni Mosque, which authorities claim was constructed on encroached land. Religious scholars said on Monday that government officials had sought 48 hours to reach a resolution.
Clerics representing various religious parties have warned that if the government fails to reinstate the mosque, they will rebuild it themselves.
They further vowed to resist the demolition of any mosque built decades ago, arguing that the government has not taken similar action against offices and other buildings constructed on green belts.
Law enforcement agencies remain deployed in the area to prevent further violence, while negotiations between religious leaders and the administration continue.
