ISLAMABAD — Sugar prices continue to soar across Pakistan, placing an increasing burden on consumers struggling to meet basic household needs.
The commodity is now being sold for as high as Rs 200 per kilogram in certain areas, with authorities yet to bring the situation under control.
In the wholesale markets, sugar is priced at Rs 178 per kg, while at the retail level, it is selling between Rs 185 and Rs 190 per kg in most urban centers. However, market insiders report that in some areas, sugar is already retailing at Rs 200 per kg, driven by hoarding fears and limited supplies.
Lahore
According to market sources in Lahore, the wholesale price of sugar has climbed to Rs 179 per kg, while retail shops are selling it for Rs 185 to Rs 190 per kg. Traders warn that prices could rise even further due to persistent supply shortages.
Quetta
In Quetta, sugar prices have increased by Rs 5 per kg this week alone, bringing the retail price to Rs 190 per kg. Sources say the price has jumped Rs 10 per kg over the past month, and further hikes are expected amid widening gaps between supply and demand.
Peshawar
In Peshawar, sugar rates have seen a sharp increase of Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kg over the last two weeks, reflecting the national trend of rising prices.
Rawalpindi
Similarly, sugar prices in Rawalpindi are on the rise. Wholesale rates now stand at Rs 182 to Rs 185 per kg, and a 50 kg bag of sugar is being sold for Rs 9,000 to Rs 9,500. Retail prices are expected to climb further unless corrective action is taken.
Market sources attribute the price hike to a delay in the arrival of imported sugar and continued disruption in the supply chain.
They warn that without timely intervention, retail prices may exceed Rs 200 per kg in more cities.
Consumers are urging government authorities to take swift action to stabilize sugar prices and curb potential hoarding and profiteering practices.
