The federal government has set aside a total of Rs. 42.7 billion under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) 2025–26 for the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Karachi, with Rs. 42.7 billion specifically designated for the project.
Construction of Green Line is a Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) line of the Karachi Breeze Metrobus system, operational in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan since December 2021, began in February 2016 and, after years of delay, it was completed on the directive of Prime Minister Imran Khan. The 18-kilometer (11.2-mile) busway constitutes the first phase of the Karachi Metrobus network and includes 22 stations (one at every kilometer).
According to media reports, the allocated funds have been distributed across two major components of the project:
An amount of Rs. 29.19 billion has been allocated for the continued development of the Green Line BRT project, which was originally approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in 2017.
An additional Rs. 13.50 billion has been allocated for the operational phase of the Green Line BRT, approved by ECNEC in 2020.
The Green Line BRT fulfills a very important place in Karachi’s mass transit scheme, providing reliable and efficient transportation service at affordable rates to the ever-increasing population of the city.
Once fully functioning and integrated with other transport lines, the BRT should prove especially useful in reducing travel times greatly, reducing traffic congestion, and reducing carbon emissions.
