The city of Rawalpindi is poised to receive two new underpasses—at Chandni Chowk and Marrir Chowk—and a flyover on IJ Principal Road, as the Punjab government moves forward with launching feasibility studies for these infrastructure developments.
The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has been tasked with conducting feasibility assessments and preparing detailed engineering designs for each project. An initial allocation of Rs. 40 million has been proposed for the planning and design phase of each initiative.
A single-barrel underpass at Chandni Chowk will connect Rawal Road to Murree Road. A second underpass is planned for Marrir Chowk. A two-lane flyover will be constructed from Siddique Chowk to IJ Principal Road, spanning several kilometers.
“These projects are being designed as signal-free corridors aimed at reducing traffic congestion at major junctions across the city,” an official said. “The Chandni Chowk and Marrir Chowk underpasses will not only reduce travel time but also enhance safety. Alternative routes will be established to ensure smooth traffic flow during construction or in the event of disruptions.”
Construction on these new developments is expected to commence following the completion of ongoing work on The Mall and Adiala Road. In addition, the government is evaluating options for either a flyover or an underpass at Kutcheri Chowk, with base studies and feasibility assessments already in progress.
