The Punjab government has declared that the final date for registration in the free solar panel initiative is January 5, 2025.
Residents must submit their National Identity Card (CNIC) number via SMS to 8800 or register online through the designated portal established by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
This initiative was launched on December 6, 2024, by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aimed at assisting the residents of Punjab who consume between 100 to 200 units of electricity.
The program aims to distribute 100,000 solar systems over the next year, with households using up to 100 units receiving 550-watt solar systems, while those consuming 200 units will be provided with 1100-watt solar systems.
Eligibility Criteria for the Free Solar Panel Scheme
The eligibility criteria for the free solar panel scheme stipulate that domestic electricity consumers must have a monthly usage of 0-200 units and a sanctioned load of up to 2 kW. Additionally, eligibility is determined based on the June 2024 electricity bill, and certain billing categories are included.
Consumers will be disqualified from the scheme if they engage in electricity theft, possess defective or multiple meters, or have defaulted on three or more payments in the past 12 months.
The initiative aims to reduce electricity costs for eligible consumers while simultaneously contributing to environmental sustainability by decreasing annual carbon emissions by approximately 57,000 tons.
Balloting Process
To ensure transparency, beneficiaries will be selected through computerized balloting, with verification of reference numbers and CNIC digits conducted via monthly electricity bills.
A helpline will be established to assist consumers with both registration and installation processes.
The solar panels and inverters will be linked to the consumers’ CNICs to prevent theft, and this project is anticipated to alleviate the financial burden on the federal government while promoting the concept of renewable energy in Punjab.
