In a shocking incident on the eve of New Year celebrations, Asher Azfar Mahesar, son of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Azfar Mahesar, struck a woman with his father’s official vehicle in Karachi’s Garden area, leaving the woman severely injured.
The accident, which occurred late on New Year’s Eve, has raised concerns about the officer’s family’s behavior and the response from local authorities.
According to police sources, the younger Mahesar was allegedly driving the double-cabin government vehicle while intoxicated. The woman, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was struck by the vehicle and was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Initial reports suggest the woman sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.
A spokesperson from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) City, however, denied claims that the vehicle hit the woman. They insisted that the woman had collided with the official vehicle, though there are conflicting reports about the incident’s sequence. Adding to the controversy, the vehicle’s security guard reportedly opened fire in the air after the crash, further escalating tensions in the area.
Asher Azfar Mahesar, along with his companions – including his cousin Mubashir Raza and two Rapid Response Force personnel – was detained by police and transferred to the nearest police station. A police inquiry has been launched, though no arrests have been made yet. The investigation is ongoing as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and the involvement of Asher’s security detail.
This is not the first time that Asher Mahesar has attracted attention for troubling behavior. Last year, videos surfaced showing him brandishing firearms and engaging in reckless shooting incidents, sparking public outrage. Despite the viral footage, his father dismissed the videos, asserting that they were part of a smear campaign.
In light of the recent events, Sindh’s Inspector General of Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has ordered a thorough review of the incident and called for accountability. The incident has ignited public debate about the misuse of power and the conduct of law enforcement personnel’s families.
As investigations continue, questions remain over the accountability of those in power and their ability to ensure justice for the injured woman.
