Senior journalist Javed Chaudhry has claimed that a proposed change to the constitution could lead to a military trial for former Prime Minister Imran Khan. This change might allow military trials for civilians, including high-profile political figures if they meet certain conditions.
In a TV program, Chaudhry explained that the amendment is being delayed because it’s still being worked on and discussed in politics.
Chaudhry also said that the government might promise the high court that Khan won’t be tried in a military court right away, but this could change. He suggested that delays are also due to the government’s need to get approval from Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa for a related legal package. If Isa rejects it, it might help another senior judge, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, which is causing problems for the government.
Chaudhry also reported that the government is having trouble getting the two-thirds majority needed in the Senate to pass the amendment. This involves negotiating with different political parties and dealing with changes in support from JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
There are also talks about potentially imposing governor rule and emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) because of security concerns. Chaudhry noted that the government is waiting for the right time to introduce these measures and get approval from Parliament.
The proposed changes could affect Pakistan’s legal and political landscape, including extending the retirement age for officials and changing governance in KP.
