The Sindh government has announced plans to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service, with a special emphasis on employing female drivers. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address transportation issues in Karachi.
According to Sindh Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon, the government will also be launching a “Pink Taxi Service.” This service is intended to provide enhanced safety and convenience for women travellers.
Memon criticised the caretaker government’s handling of traffic issues, attributing the recent surge in transportation problems to their incompetence. He stated that the current administration is actively working to resolve these issues and improve the city’s transport infrastructure.
With the end of the caretaker government, the provincial government has resumed work on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The World Bank is providing support for this initiative, which aims to benefit citizens by improving public transport.
The BRT project spans 26.5 kilometres and will include new EV buses to enhance convenience for commuters. Additionally, bio-gas-powered red line buses will traverse underpasses to ensure smooth and efficient travel.
Memon also criticised the previous government, claiming that it failed to deliver on promises of employment and housing. He asserted that the burden of the PTI government’s shortcomings has been unfairly placed on subsequent administrations.
