As Pakistan braces itself for upcoming general elections next month, the nation is once again grappling with a distressing upswing in terrorist attacks. The recent assassination of a prominent religious leader in Islamabad and the escalating frequency of both minor and major acts of terrorism, particularly in Balochistan and Pakhtunkhwa provinces, pose a severe threat to the security of both civilians and security forces.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the upper house of the parliament passed a resolution on Friday, urging a delay in the scheduled February 8 elections. While the rise in terrorist activities undeniably disrupts the normalcy required for a fair electoral process, it is equally evident that any postponement could result in irreparable damage to the country’s political and economic stability.
Attributed to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the spate of attacks has been repeatedly substantiated by the Pakistani government with compelling evidence. Moreover, the involvement of the Taliban-led Afghan government in supporting and providing a haven for the TTP within Afghanistan has been a consistent concern for Islamabad. Despite persistent pleas for intervention, Kabul has failed to prevent the TTP from launching deadly attacks on Pakistani soil.
Recent reports suggest that Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, the chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), is currently on an official visit to Kabul. While the purpose of his visit is officially tied to an invitation from the Taliban government, it remains unclear whether he holds a mandate from the Pakistani government to address the TTP issue with Taliban officials, particularly with Supreme Leader Molvi Haibatullah.
At this critical juncture, it is imperative for the Pakistani government to officially designate Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman as its representative and empower him with a clear mandate to engage in discussions with the Afghan government. The primary objective should be to persuade Kabul to cease the use of Afghan soil against Pakistan and to take decisive action against the TTP, which has been actively involved in orchestrating attacks within Pakistan.
Such diplomatic initiatives not only serve the interests of Pakistan but also foster a cooperative relationship between the neighboring countries. By addressing the root causes of terrorism and collaborating on comprehensive counter-terrorism strategies, both Pakistan and Afghanistan can work towards ensuring peace and stability in the region. The urgency of the matter calls for swift and decisive action to mitigate the immediate threat posed by terrorist activities and to pave the way for a secure and democratic electoral process.
