Netflix users are poking fun at Elon Musk after the Tesla founder expressed dissatisfaction with a scene featuring his cars in the recently released film “Leave the World Behind.”
The post-apocalyptic thriller, created by Sam Esmail of Mr Robot fame, premiered on the streaming service last Friday and quickly climbed to the top of its most-watched rankings. Adapted from Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, the film portrays a society unraveling in the aftermath of a technological breakdown.
Despite its popularity, Musk appears to have refrained from watching the film. In response to a clip posted by Netflix, he pointed out what he perceived as a plot inaccuracy. The scene in question features a married couple (played by Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) being pursued by driverless Teslas, ultimately leading to a significant road pile-up.
Musk, taking to X/Twitter, asserted, “Teslas can charge from solar panels even if the world goes fully Mad Max and there is no more gasoline!” His intention was to highlight that the cars could endure an electric-free apocalyptic scenario, but it became evident that he hadn’t actually watched the film. In “Leave the World Behind,” the Teslas function perfectly; they have simply been hacked to pursue people.
Netflix viewers were quick to react, with one stating, “This guy didn’t watch the movie,” and another suggesting, “Elon should rewatch the movie.” A subscriber added humorously, “Best thing about Leave the World Behind is it triggered Elon.”
Writer-director Esmail joined in by sharing Musk’s post and noting, “My movie LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND is now streaming on Netflix.” The film has surpassed the Christmas comedy “Family Switch” in Netflix’s most-watched charts. Notably, “Family Switch” had earlier sparked controversy due to a joke centered on an “incestuous” kiss.
Both “Leave the World Behind” and “Family Switch” are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
