As the head of any country including Pakistan, the words of a prime minister are very important. They not only reflect the position of the government but also have a profound impact on the nation and its people. This is especially important for a country like Pakistan whose full name is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Recently, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while appreciating the efforts of the current caretaker government made statements about the lack of progress in development projects by the previous government. However, the attitude of the present government has not been satisfactory. They have gone against the orders of the Supreme Court and tried to obstruct the electoral process contrary to the principles of justice and democracy, which has not been a covert affair.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan, which had ordered the elections to be held in 90 days, made it clear in its instructions that the government should provide funds for the elections. However, both the federal and caretaker governments of Punjab are trying to shirk their responsibilities, which is nothing short of flagrant violation of the law.
At this critical time, it is important for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to prioritize the unity of all institutions including the Supreme Court, provincial governments and the Election Commission of Pakistan. All stakeholders must be on the same page and the federation and provinces must show solidarity for timely free, fair and transparent elections.
As the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, our country values honesty, integrity and unity. The Prime Minister and his government should strive to set an example of honesty, integrity and transparency in their statements and actions. They have to avoid political rhetoric based on making baseless accusations so that the people who are hating the ruling political party PML-N can develop positive sentiments in favor of the government.
Moreover, attempts by the government to obstruct the electoral process are against democratic values and principles of justice. The government must act impartially and in accordance with the orders of the Supreme Court, ensuring that the electoral process is conducted in a transparent and fair manner.
Time has come for all stakeholders to work together for the betterment of Pakistan and the people. The caretaker government of Punjab and the federal government should take many steps for national unity and harmony in addition to holding the election on time.
