Economic misery and billions of investment

Editorial by Editorial

The country’s economy is slowly weakening and the claims of receiving billions of aid from the federal government are proving to be a wall of sand due to the fact that the reports of the international organizations and the real statistics of the economy do not match.

Recently Army Chief General Asim Munir met Saudi Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and then it was reported that Saudi Arabia is considering increasing its investment in Pakistan up to 10 billion dollars and the amount deposited in State Bank of Pakistan is also 5 billion.

With deep friendship and ties between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan based on ideals and religion, it is regrettable that the time for deliberation has passed, so if Pakistan is to be truly saved from default, practical steps should be taken. The monster of inflation should not force poor people to commit crimes.

Employment was already low so the government stopped the business of import and export industries by not opening LCs and then a new wave of unemployment prevailed, which is gradually swallowing the jobs of countless people. Many industries have reached the brink of collapse and those that have not, do not have much hope of improvement from the situation.

A large number of the middle class has been forced to shift their families into 3-to-2 or 2-to-1 room rented houses and to enroll their children in expensive to medium and then to the cheapest schools. The condition of education is now getting worse.

People whose monthly income is around Rs100,000 are also facing difficulties in the current era, now think about those who are surviving on the minimum salary standard set by the government at 25 thousand per month or less are forced, what will happen to them?

While the utility bills and energy crisis have broken the back, children’s education expenses and rising house rents are worrying the poor. In such a situation, what improvement can be expected for the people who receive assistance from the Benazir Income Support Program or those who receive food from the Dastarkhuwan program of welfare institutions?

Undoubtedly, whether it is Dastarkhuwan program or Benazir Income Support, both programs help the middle class a lot, but in this era of inflation, even that help is like cumin in the camel’s mouth. People are busy day and night worrying about food, drink and employment. The dreams of education, development and prosperity were lost.

The current government has to improve its economic policies to gain the trust of other financial institutions including the IMF, after which aid from friendly countries will get in Pakistan
