Lettergate scandal – Part II

Amir Khakwani by Amir Khakwani

Reading Time: 4 mins read

Is the opposition involved in a foreign conspiracy? Imran Khan and his associates seem to be giving the impression that since the Americans want to change our government, they have threatened it and also referred to the no-confidence motion in the threatening letter. According to Imran Khan, the opposition is the toll in this American conspiracy.

This is a very serious allegation in its place, for which the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is presenting very weak arguments and evidence. Imran Khan has repeatedly said that how did the Americans know that the no-confidence motion was being tabled? On March 6, the US said this, the letter reached Pakistan on Mar 7 and on the eighth, no-confidence motion was tabled. That is, according to Imran, the involvement was proved.

The point is that everyone in Pakistan knew about the no-confidence motion. In February, Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced in a press conference we are bringing a no-confidence motion, we are doing our homework and in two or three weeks we will complete our numbers and bring the motion. After that a series of contacts and meetings of the opposition leaders started at different places.

The second objection to the PTI’s mandatory statement is that the opposition did not intend to suddenly vote no-confidence or oppose Imran. All of them were against the government from the first day. The PML-N was also a fierce opponent. Maulana Fazlur Rehman held his independence march and sit-in two years ago.

All this was to overthrow the Imran government, then the Americans were absent from the scene, the situation in Afghanistan was also under their control. The opposition wanted to overthrow the government by force of public protest, which was a more serious situation.

Asif Zardari has always spoken of no-confidence because he is considered an expert in such manipulations. The PML-N and Maulana were not in favor of no-confidence because they knew that it was not possible to remove the government through in-house change in view of the support of the Establishment.

In October-November last year, due to the mistakes of Imran Khan himself, the whole chapter of “One Page” was torn to pieces and the Establishment became somewhat angry and neutral and told the government to run its own affairs.

As soon as the opposition realized this, they tabled a no-confidence motion. It was an understandable and logical strategy. Before the Imran government could reunite with the Establishment, the opposition wanted to seize the opportunity. They feared that the Imran government may make a big announcement in the June budget with the election year in mind. Were foreign forces involved in their previous efforts as well?

Another argument put forward by the PTI is that all of a sudden some American and European diplomats mobilized and met with opposition leaders and dissident members of parliament. According to PTI supporters, this is evidence of opposition treason and collusion, otherwise why do these people meet white diplomats?

The point is, such diplomatic meetings are routine. Whenever there is uncertainty in the country, foreign diplomats hold formal, informal meetings with various parties and leaders. It is their duty to assess the changing situation and send a report to their country. Not only whites but Pakistani diplomats stationed in different countries do the same. If you read the books written by diplomats, you will find many such incidents.

Former Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh was the ambassador to Pakistan when he was in touch with the Bhutto family, meeting with PPP leaders, the Zia government was unhappy about it, but it was not possible to stop it. Natwar Singh wrote all these things in his book.

It is pertinent to mention here that many times American, British and European diplomats used to meet Imran Khan himself when he was in opposition. Take a look at the old newspaper records, you will find the news and pictures of many such meetings. Was Imran Khan a Western agent who met these diplomats?

I think the National Security Committee endorsed the letter from the Pakistani diplomat from the United States, because there was no reason to deny it. The National Security Committee agreed that it was “inappropriate and wrong” for the United States to do so, and for that reason, the Secretary of State was summoned to the State Department in protest.

In the light of all these points, my personal opinion is that the letter is in its place, what the Prime Minister said in this regard is correct, but the no-confidence motion is not a foreign conspiracy nor is the Opposition leaders a foreign tool. Imran Khan should fight the political war in a political way.

All parties and leaders are patriots, their political views, methods, etc. may differ. But calling an opposition politician unpatriotic or a traitor is actually a fascist approach. Imran Khan and his associates should avoid going to this extreme at all costs.
